Devangi..a term, which we often use for those who are out of their senses / who are insane. Another meaning, which I personally feel, is the restlessness of human mind. (In our society, the meaning of Devangi has slight negative connotation).
Few months back I started reading a book– Raja Gidh written by Bano Gudsia. Then onwards, I am thinking on the notion of Devangi, its forms and most importantly its cause. Still I am on the finishing lines of this book but the overall understanding I developed from this book is “Devangi...is a resultant of Ishq-e-la Hasil” (“la hasil” means anything which is not attained / unattainable).
Initially I thought that the idea of Ishq-e-la Hasil could only be correlated with the notion “Ishq-e-Mejazi/Haqiqi”. I limit myself by restricting this notion for those who are unable to attain “the ultimate Ishq” and probably because of which they transcend themselves into the form of Devangi. But now I feel that consciously or unconsciously, Ishq-e-la hasil is associated with everyone’s life. All the restlessness of our mind is because of Ishq-e-la hasil. This restlessness of mind could be in any form…it can be in the form of unanswerable questions related to our self-discovery, self-realization or personal search...
I am reflecting on a question “Does this individual restlessness has any direct or indirect relation with our society? If yes, then, does our societal issues (such as terrorism) can be addressed through this notion?
I personally feel that answers of all these questions lies when we understand that “Hasil is within La-Hasil” (LA ILLA HA IL LAL LA…NO GOD BUT ALLAH… probably resembles the same concept).
Your opinion is needed.
Yes. The unattainable contains or leads to the attainable. This is because Love has many levels, and the following five should be perceived as concentric circles, so that if you begin with the first or the second, you start working your way outward, expanding your circle:
ReplyDelete1. Personal love and relationships
2. Love of nation
3. Love of humanity
4. Love of all living things
5. Love of the entire creation
Unattainaibility, or disappointment, simply means that you are denying the possibility of moving on to the next level, or are failing to understand where you have made a mistake in being pure on the existing level. As such, disappointments are illusions and believing in illusion is what we call mental instability, madness (in the negative sense), etc.
Extremely useful dilemna/presentation and equally vital response, Shafique Sahib! I am glad to see you suggest using the list of 5 as concentric circles. I'm wondering if this understanding allows movements "further out"each time one moves around the 5 so that as each area of love is revisited one could go deeper and higher. (And not need be blocked by the reality that some areas will be deeper and higher than others?) Is not the history of each life and our collective history itself a kind of spiral or revisiting? (rather than completely linear or neatly chronologic?) Sorry if I've confused anything with too much complexity?
ReplyDeletesorry, dilemma was mispelled :)
ReplyDeleteYes, Connie. Concentric circles are just a 2D metaphor for something which is more than 3D. We revisit, we cross over, and all sort of possible patterns. The journey doesn't stop, and need not stop, and it certainly is cumulative.
ReplyDeleteYes! Reassuring to say the least!
